Around Ealing  - Winter 2001

Students pedal to victory

Wheely good award

At the annual London Cycling Campaign awards, Ealing won an award for its Southhall Transport Exercise Project (STEP). The project, awinner in the Most Effective Complementary Activity category, was praised by the judges for its research-based approach in looking at the barriers that prevent young women from cycling.

Based at the Dormers Wells High School in Southall, StEP is in its second year. The project encourages girls and young women to ride bicycles by providing bikes and equipment, cycle maintenance skills and on-road cycle training.
Eight girls were selected to take part in the course, seven of whom had never cycled before.
