Cycle Digest - Spring 2000
Up Hill for cycle training
At their conference on 2nd December
in York the Road Danger Reduction Forum launched their call on the government
to set aside a fund of £10M specifically for local authorities to
spend on cycle training, and for the establishment of a national standard
for cycling instructors. Ken Spence of the RDRF repeated this call on 13th
January following the launch of the School Travel Advisory Group report.
Keith Hill the Transport Minister said the government
will be encouraging local authorities to develop cycling training on a
much larger scale than is happening at present as part of their local transport
plans, however he was not sure that making money available especially for
cycling training was a practical proposition.
Ken Spence said he feared that relying on local authorities
to come up with good schemes was not going to happen - the Centre for Alternative
and Sustainable Transport at the University of Stafford surveyed local
authorities and found that only 15% were prepared to make on-road training
available for upper primary children who wish to cycle. |
