Ealing Newsround - July 1999

Cycle Training

Cycle training, to give nervous cyclists on-road confidence and cycling skills, was also organised as part of this year's Don't Choke Ealing campaign. The training sessions were made up of children from Elthorne Park High School and adults, many of whom hadn't been on a bike since they were children themselves, and was jointly funded by Leisure Planning and Development and Transport Strategy and Projects. Ealing

Testimonies/feedback from the people who attended the course show the value of such training to encourage more people to use their bikes as an alternative to the car. Pushwinder Bhogal, Research Officer from Leisure Planning and Development, is a good example. "I haven't been on a bike for at least ten years and even then I was very wobbly and nervous on the roads," she said. "The course has really made me feel able to cycle instead of using the car for some small journeys and I'm hoping to build up enough confidence to cycle to work".
Pushwinder is planning to take out a £500 cycle loan from Finance Admin to get a bike and all the equipment she needs to cycle safely. She has also joined the council staff's Bicycle Users' Group.
