London Cyclist - February-March 2000
Health Education Authority awards pro-cycling cash
to Hackney and Southwark London Cycling Campaign groups

Hackney Cycing Campaign has received £6000 for
2 projects, one of which is the Hackney Bike Posse. The Posse is a project
that aims to teach children in a local youth club about on-road cycling
almost without them knowing it. Tim Evans, who will be co-ordinating the
Posse project explains: "The idea is to take groups of kids out cycling
to have some fun - either just cycling or going bowling or skating or whatever."
The rides will be escorted by Cycle Training trainers and youth workers.
"We hope to build upon not just the road skills but also the knowledge
that bikes are a way of getting out and seeing your friends.
Armed with the knowledge that 61% of Hackney households
do not have access to a car, Evans hopes that the kids who become members
of the Hackney Bike Posse - which will run this coming spring and summer
- will carry on cycling all their lives. In preparing Hackney's bid for
the Posse, Evens referred to a school children's Critical Mass, organised
by Simeon Bamford of Cycle Training, as proof that the on-road cycling
with children is safe.
