Pupil peddle power was the order of the day when 100 school
children lined up to promote the benefits of cycling to school.
Children from Reay Primary and Clapham Manor schools got
into gear to encourage fellow students to switch to getting around on two
wheels.
Forty Reay Primary pupils cycled from their school in
Hackford Road, Oval, to Belmont Street, Clapham, Where they were joined
by 80 kids from Clapham Manor school for the return trip.
Then Clapham children cycled back to their own school
to complete their ride.
The fun ride brought the streets of Clapham to a standstill
for a brief moment, but frowns from drivers turned to smiles when they
saw so many children having a good time.
Nigel Hazeldon, a parent governor at Clapham Manor School,
said "Our only problem is that all the kids want to cycle to school tomorrow,
and we don't have the space - but we are working on that."
… Cllr Chris Henley, executive member for regeneration
for Lambeth Council, which helped stage Tuesday's ride by Reay and Clapham
Manor kids, said: " The success of this event just goes to show how much
potential there is to encourage cycling, especially for journeys like the
school run." |
