Southwark Local - 25th June 1999
The chain gang!
KIDS saddled up for an alternative
school reunion to encourage pedal power. Pupils from Victory School, in
Victory Place, Walworth, cycled over to Townsend Street to pick up Townsend
School chums and then on to English Martyrs in Flint Street, for a final
cycle down Thurlow Street and Portland Street together. The Walworth Reunion
Ride on Wednesday last week was part of National Bike Week and was organised
by Cycle Training, a Peckham company which provides professional on-road
cycle training across London. |

The Southwark-based LITMUS project surveyed the children's
travel patterns to school at the same time as a basis for future "safer
routes to school" projects. Southwark Council hopes the project will make
way for sustainable transport education for all the area's children, including
practical cycle training. Ian Martin of the council's health promotion
unit, which commissioned the idea, said, "The importance of cycling is
immense.
"It is an excellent form of exercise, as well as an environmentally
friendly method of transport, so encouraging children and young people
to see it as a viable and enjoyable way of getting around is essential."
